STEM RESEARCH

Advancing Knowledge NPC (AK NPC) was established to address systemic deficiencies in science and mathematics education within under-resourced South African schools, particularly in rural contexts. Its work is grounded in empirical research identifying gaps in educator content knowledge, pedagogical practice, laboratory infrastructure, and learner engagement.

Problem Statement
Key challenges include:
  • Limited educator proficiency in STEM subject content
  • Insufficient practical and inquiry-based teaching approaches
  • Lack of functional laboratory infrastructure
  • Low learner engagement, especially among girls and rural populations
These factors contribute to poor conceptual understanding and weak academic performance in STEM subjects.

Methodological Approach
AK NPC applies:
  • Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE)
  • Constructivist learning theory
This enables a shift from abstract instruction to experiential learning through experimentation, observation, and data-driven reasoning.

Programme Components
Teacher Professional Development
Accredited training focused on IBSE methodologies and classroom implementation.
STEM Laboratory Development (Science TLC)
  • Engineering-based laboratory design (primary, secondary, training models)
  • Compliance with safety and infrastructure standards
  • Curriculum-aligned equipment integration
Technology Integration
  • Smart classroom technologies
  • Digital teaching tools and connectivity
STEM Enrichment
  • Women in Mathematics Programme
  • STEM clubs and mentorship
  • Avionics and STEMI roadshows

Implementation Model
AK NPC utilises a phased approach:
  1. Research and needs assessment
  2. Pilot programme implementation
  3. Infrastructure development
  4. Scaled rollout through partnerships

Monitoring and Evaluation
A structured M&E framework assesses:
  • Educator competence and adoption of IBSE
  • Learner engagement and participation
  • Academic performance outcomes

Value Proposition
AK NPC delivers a scalable, integrated STEM ecosystem that combines:
  • Research-based pedagogy
  • Teacher capacity development
  • Engineered laboratory infrastructure
  • Digital enablement
This systemic model ensures sustainable impact and contributes to national STEM capacity development.

Strategic Impact
Through iterative research, innovation, and partnerships, AK NPC strengthens science and mathematics education, supporting South Africa’s long-term innovation and skills development agenda.
